THE PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION

BARRIERS TO COMMUNICATION
Communication will often be disturbed and distorted leading to a condition of misunderstanding and faure of communication.
Let us now consider some of these barriers:
Code:
That is the addresser and the addressee may not share the same language between them. The addresser is speaking in french and the addressee does not know French.
2.Vocabulalry:
The market declined under persistent bear hammering. One who is not familiar with the vocabulary of the stock market may not understand what is meant.
3. Concept:
Not all may understand technical and subject specific concept. eg: A black hole is simple language, yet the concept msy not be understand by many.
4. Background knowledge and Shared assumption:
For example, Victorian style mansion may not be understand by those living outside England.
5. Culture specific:
Communication may cause misunderstanding.
6. Physical environment :
Noise and other environment disturbances or even physical distance between the address and the addresseecan impede effactive communication.
7. Affactive factors:
Personal factors for example anxiety, fear, attitude, motivation, lack of mutual trust, lack of attention. All these factors impede communication.
Some other barriers easy to learn and remember are following :
Psychological barriers: There are various mental and psychological issues that may be barriers to effective communications. Some people have stage fear, Speech disorders, depression etc.
Emotional barriers: The emotional IQ of a person determines the ease and comfort with which they can communicate.
Perception barriers: Different people perceive the same things differently. This is a fact which we must consider during the communication.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF COMMUNICATION
Communication may be classified into several categories on the following basis:
Expression
Flow
Relationship
Various media of Expression(written,oral, gestural)
Written communication: There are many ways that written communications can be used. The number of ways is ever increasing with the penetration of smartphones and the internet. One of the one most common forms of written communication used till date is email. But slowly, written type of communication is becoming more informal with WhatsApp and other online messaging apps being used regularly.
Advantage of written communication :
The advantage of written communication is that it acts as the final word once a decision has been taken.
When you quote your prices to the customer, when you rank a dealer on top, when you promote an employee or when you launch a new product, you usewritten communication to communicate the update to your team and your employees.
Oral communication:
Oral communication is the process of verbally transmitting information and ideas from one individual or group to another. Oral communication can be either formal or informal.
Gestural communication:
Expression through body language is known as gestural communication. Who is not familiar with the nodding of the head from side to side to say no
or up and down convay yes.
Formal and informal communication
At the workplace, these two terms are used in slightly different sense than what we generally understand by them. Communication done through the chain of command is known as formal communicafion. It involves the transmission of officials message in the formal organization structure.
Informal communication does not flow through the official channels of communication. It involves the spontaneous expression of reaction and ideas and is usually done orally.
The words Formal and informal are used to indicate change in form and language of communication according to change in relationship between the addresser and the addressee and the context of situation.
